Why You Should Apply Sunscreen Before Going for a Swim

Exposing your skin to the sun, whether swimming outdoors or in a pool, can be damaging. To maintain healthy skin, it is essential to incorporate sunscreen into your routine as a vital step to prevent sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.

1. Why You Need Sunscreen When Swimming

Swimming is a fantastic form of exercise with numerous health benefits, but it’s important to protect your skin, say health experts. When you swim outdoors, especially between 9 am and 4 pm, your skin is exposed to intense UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays, which account for 95% of UV radiation, cause skin issues like dark spots, freckles, wrinkles, and skin cancer. The remaining 5% is made up of UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburns, redness, skin peeling, and irritation, and also contribute to skin cancer. Even indoor swimming pools can be problematic due to the presence of chlorine, which can damage the epidermis, leading to dry and discolored skin.

By applying sunscreen before taking a dip, you can enjoy the health benefits of swimming while maintaining healthy, glowing skin.

Whether you’re swimming in a pool or outdoors, your skin is at risk. Sunscreen is a crucial step in maintaining healthy skin.

2. How to Apply Sunscreen for Swimming

When swimming outdoors or at the beach, the intensity of UV rays is heightened due to the lack of shade and the reflective nature of sand. Additionally, swimming can cause you to sweat, which accelerates the breakdown of sunscreen. To effectively protect your skin, opt for a water-resistant sunscreen. These formulas are designed to withstand water exposure, ensuring prolonged protection.

Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas, including your neck, feet, and ears, using a product with an SPF of 30 or higher that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. A thin, even layer is all you need; applying too much won’t provide better protection and may lead to clogged pores. Reapply sunscreen every two hours if you’re spending time outdoors without swimming. If you’re swimming or at the beach, reapply immediately after exiting the water. If you’re wearing makeup, gently blot your face with a damp makeup remover pad before reapplying sunscreen.

3. Important Considerations When Using Sunscreen

Avoid swimming during peak sun hours: Try to swim indoors or in shaded areas between 9 am and 4 pm when UV rays are at their strongest.

Shower after swimming: Rinse off with fresh water after swimming to remove chlorine, salt, and other impurities from your skin.

Moisturize: Apply a moisturizing lotion immediately after showering to replenish your skin’s moisture and promote softness and smoothness.

Treat sunburn: If you do get sunburnt, soothe your skin with cool water or aloe vera gel to reduce irritation. Avoid scratching or rubbing the affected area.
