So what do the experts say about this issue?

Should you brush your teeth or drink water first in the morning?

In response to Bao To Quoc, Dr. Nguyen Van Hoang (110 Military Hospital) advises that after waking up in the morning, we don’t need to brush our teeth or wash our face immediately, but should instead drink 300 – 500ml of warm water.

Dr. Hoang explains that in the morning, our saliva contains a lot of amylase – an enzyme that helps improve our digestive system. In addition, the saliva has an alkaline environment with beneficial bacteria, which helps neutralize some of the acid in the stomach. If we brush our teeth first instead of drinking water, we will waste the beneficial bacteria in our mouth.

Drinking a glass of warm water immediately after waking up also helps replenish the lost water in our body while sleeping, cleanses the bacteria in the mouth, and speeds up the detoxification process, thereby improving intestinal cleansing effectiveness.

In Japan, a country known for longevity, people still follow the principle of drinking water before brushing their teeth to maintain health and prevent aging.

Furthermore, drinking water immediately upon waking up also helps build a strong immune system by enhancing the metabolic process, preventing various diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, constipation, gastric inflammation, and kidney stones.

How to drink water properly after waking up?

Dr. Nguyen Van Hoang suggests that in order to safely drink a glass of warm water after waking up, people should brush their teeth before going to bed the night before. This ensures that the mouth is not filled with harmful bacteria the next morning.

The water you drink when you wake up should not be too hot or too cold as it can cause damage to the stomach and increase the risk of stomach ulcers. The ideal temperature for a glass of water is 20 – 25 degrees Celsius. Drinking warm water not only promotes blood circulation but also effectively enhances immunity.

It is best to drink water in small sips, avoiding drinking too quickly as it can make it difficult for the body to absorb nutrients and may cause you to choke on the water.

In the morning, you should drink water in a standing position to create a “water punch” that cleanses the digestive system. After drinking water, light exercise is recommended to cleanse the intestines and stimulate the need to go to the bathroom.
