Recently, a user named Quynh Dịu Dàng shared a funny situation with her burnt pot on social media and attracted a lot of attention. Specifically, the two videos she shared received over 10 million views and thousands of comments in just 3 days after being uploaded.

In the video, the user explained that the burnt pot she was holding was the result of boiling sugar on the induction cooker without paying attention. “I was boiling sugar to make fish sauce, but it turned out like this. At first, it was boiling perfectly, but I forgot it on the induction cooker, and at night, I don’t know how, the cooker automatically turned on and the pot was placed on it. The stove and the pot are placed outside in the hallway, and I closed the door when going to sleep, so I didn’t smell the burnt odor until I woke up. Luckily, our stove has an automatic power cutoff when it gets too hot, otherwise, a more serious accident might have happened,” the owner added.

According to the user’s sharing, it can be seen that she made two mistakes when using the induction cooker. Firstly, she was careless and didn’t pay attention to the cooking process. Secondly, even when she no longer needed to use it, she left the pot on the induction cooker without completely turning off the power. Fortunately, the induction cooker used by the family has a self-power cutoff feature when the temperature is too high, so there were no other serious accidents such as dangerous fires.

Turning off the induction cooker with a button is not enough

In addition to gas stoves, many families are now gradually switching to electric stoves or induction cookers, which operate using electricity, to serve their cooking needs. When using electric stoves or induction cookers, users simply need to operate them by pressing the touch-sensitive buttons on the surface or side of the stove, and the stove’s surface will heat up, providing heat to cook food.

Many users believe that electric stoves or induction cookers are safer and more aesthetically pleasing than gas stoves. However, in reality, it is not always the case. A report by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in 2020 showed the opposite results.

Specifically, the NFPA report in 2020 stated that households using electric stoves or induction cookers have a fire rate more than 2.6 times higher than households using gas stoves. Surprisingly, the fatality rate in accidents in households using electric stoves or induction cookers is over 3.4 times higher than households using gas stoves, and the injury rate is nearly 5 times higher.

Accidents with electric stoves or induction cookers can have multiple causes. One of the causes is the user’s negligent habit of not completely turning off the power when there is no need to use the stove, only turning it off using the buttons. The sensitivity of electric stoves or induction cookers is quite high, so just a slight touch from a human, objects, or pets in the house can trigger the stove, even when no one is there to observe.

According to home appliance experts or electronics, if the stove is not used for a long period of time, such as overnight or for a few days when there is no one at home, it is best to completely disconnect the power from the electric stove or induction cooker to avoid unexpected accidents. This method can be done by installing an additional circuit breaker for the stove. This is also a solution that many technicians recommend to users when they first equip an electric stove or induction cooker.

In addition to disconnecting the power from the electric stove or induction cooker, when it is not in use, during the operation of the appliance, users should not be absent-minded or careless but need to be present and constantly monitor. This has been emphasized by Tasting Table, as one of the common mistakes of many households that can lead to accidents when using electric stoves or induction cookers, as well as all types of cooking stoves in general.

If users have to leave while cooking, they should turn off the stove or reduce it to a certain temperature level and use the lock or child-proof lock feature to minimize the risk of accidents.

Other safety precautions when using electric stoves or induction cookers

Here are some other safety precautions for users when using electric stoves or induction cookers.

1. Use the stove at the appropriate temperature

Do not use electric stoves or induction cookers at the highest temperature continuously for a long time, as this can increase the power consumption of the appliance and make the stove deteriorate faster. Users should only use the stove at the maximum temperature for the first few minutes of the cooking cycle, then switch to medium or low heat.

2. Choose the right pot

Users should have a separate set of pots dedicated to electric stoves or induction cookers, to ensure efficient cooking without wasting energy.

Specifically, pots used for induction cookers should be made of stainless steel, cast iron, or stainless steel. In addition, prioritize selecting pots with a flat bottom. Having a non-flat bottom that is excessively decorated can affect the absorption and transfer of heat from the stove to the pot or pan. As a result, the food in the pot may be unevenly cooked, causing inconvenience during use.

When purchasing pots for electric stoves or induction cookers, it is also necessary to consider the size of the stove. Do not buy pots that are too large or too small compared to the stove.

3. Regularly clean the stove

After a long period of use, the induction cooker will have grease stains or leftover food residue, burnt marks, sticking tightly to the glass surface. This issue not only makes the stove lose its aesthetics but also reduces its heat supply ability, resulting in higher energy consumption. Over time, it can cause temperature discrepancies and even crack the glass surface of the stove.

Therefore, on a daily basis, after each use, users should wait for about 15 – 20 minutes for the stove to cool down, then use a soft cloth with specialized cleaner to clean the stove. This not only helps prolong the life of the stove, but also saves time and effort compared to weekly or monthly thorough cleanings.
