Here is a simple guide on how to grow 5 types of herbs at home without using seeds:
1. Growing Garlic
Garlic grows from the sprouts found within the garlic cloves, each clove can develop into a garlic plant. Nowadays, garlic is an essential herb in every Vietnamese family’s meals. You can easily grow garlic at home with just a cup of water.
Specifically, when the garlic starts to sprout, you should place the sprouts in a cup of clean water and wait until they grow taller before planting them in a small pot. Don’t forget to cover the cloves with soil and plant them in a cool place to quickly “harvest” them.
2. Growing Lemongrass
First, you need to prepare a few fresh lemongrass stalks with the root intact, then cut off the top part and soak the whole stalk in a cup of clean water.
Next, place the lemongrass cup in a dry, airy place with a bit of sunlight like next to a window, in the garden, etc.
Lemongrass takes 2 days to root and at most 1 week after soaking in water, it will start growing leaves. Finally, after about 2 weeks, the lemongrass stalk will grow many leaves and almost fully develop.
Finally, you need to transfer the lemongrass into a small pot for planting, wait for about 3 weeks from the germination to be able to eat it. Especially, don’t forget to change the water regularly during the soaking process (about once every 2 days) to avoid rotting.
3. Growing Green Onion
When you just bought green onion, you need to keep the roots and 3cm of fresh stems, without bruising. Then, pour clean water into a glass and start soaking them in a cool place with sunlight.
After about 3-4 days, the green onion will quickly grow fresh green leaves. You can cut off the leaves for cooking and keep the roots and 3cm of fresh stems for planting next time. It’s so simple, isn’t it?
4. Growing Ginger
To choose fresh ginger for planting later, you should choose ginger root with moderate height, fresh, and characteristic fresh and spicy taste.
Next, use your hands to break about 3cm of the freshest part of the ginger gently, then proceed to dry the surface. When the ginger starts to dry, soak it with warm water overnight, then grow it in a pot. Remember to choose loose and well-drained soil.
Finally, place the pot for growing ginger in a warm and sunny place. After about 20 days of planting, ginger will sprout if it is regularly watered 2-3 times a day. When ginger sprouts many leaves, you can water both the leaves and the rhizome instead of just splashing water on the surface as in the early days of planting. Ginger takes quite a long time to harvest (about 1-2 months), so you need to be patient until they reach a height of 60cm-120cm!
5. Growing Onion
To choose tasty and good-rooted onion for planting, you should choose fresh onion bulbs, intact roots, and no scratches.
Then, keep the bulb’s root and soak it in clean water. After about 7 days of soaking, the root will grow and have a pale white color.
In addition to growing onions in water, you can also grow the roots in well-drained soil. Remember to choose loose, fertile soil with a suitable pH level!
