1. Anxiety and Stress
In an interview with Men’s Health, Dr. Debra W Soh, a neuroscientist, revealed that when experiencing “pleasure,” the human body releases endorphins, which can help improve mood.

In addition, a study published in the journal Biological Psychology by Scottish researchers found that compared to individuals who engage in sexual activity at least once every two weeks, those who abstain from intimacy may struggle to cope with stressful situations in life, such as public speaking. A healthy sexual life can make individuals feel happier and healthier.
2. Insomnia and Trouble Sleeping
Multiple studies have shown that sexual activity can increase the release of happiness hormones such as oxytocin and prolactin, while reducing stress-related hormones like cortisol. This is why you may feel relaxed after sexual activity and find it easier to fall asleep.
On the other hand, if you abstain from sexual activity for a prolonged period of time, your body may experience stressors that make you feel uncomfortable and restless, making it difficult to achieve quality sleep.

3. Body Aches and Pains
According to various studies, the pleasurable sensation experienced during sexual intercourse can trigger the release of endorphins, which can help alleviate symptoms such as headaches, joint pain, back pain, and leg pain.
Furthermore, sexual activity can also help reduce menstrual cramps in women. Therefore, many individuals may notice that abstaining from sexual activity can exacerbate body aches and pains.
4. Forgetfulness and Memory
A study that analyzed data from approximately 6,000 individuals aged 50 and above over a period of 2 years revealed that those who engaged in sexual activity more frequently had better memory.
Prior research has also discovered that sexual activity can stimulate nerve cells in the hippocampus region of the brain, which enhances memory function.
Therefore, it’s not surprising if you experience symptoms of forgetfulness and absentmindedness when you have been deprived of sexual activity for a prolonged period of time.
5. Fewer Calories Burned
Scientific studies have shown that sexual activity can help burn approximately 5 calories per minute, equivalent to the calories burned during fast-paced walking. Additionally, during sexual intercourse, you also increase your oxygen consumption, similar to the physical exertion of shoveling or climbing stairs.
Therefore, when you abstain from sexual activity, your body will not release the same amount of calories, implying that you may need to engage in other types of physical activities to burn excess calories.
