A recent study published in BMC Medicine has found that maintaining a daily coffee habit can effectively protect us from obesity and joint inflammation, especially as we age.
Obesity and inflammation are two common conditions in middle-aged individuals, especially those over 50. They not only affect the quality of life but can also cause other serious health problems.
An international research team from the UK, Denmark, the US, Switzerland, and Greece, led by Dr. Loukas Zagkos from the Royal Holloway University of London and Dr. Héléne T.Cronjé from the University of Copenhagen, explored the impact of coffee consumption on obesity and joint inflammation based on some preliminary evidence.
Coffee, one of the most popular beverages globally and easily incorporated into a daily diet, was chosen as the focus of the study due to its well-known health benefits.
The study examined data from over 826,000 individuals, including 177,000 with arthritis and 649,000 in the control group, ranging in age from 47 to 71.
Analysis of the results revealed that individuals with high caffeine levels in their blood – an indication of regular coffee consumption – had a 10% lower risk of arthritis compared to those who did not drink coffee or only occasionally consumed it.
Approximately one-third of the benefits that coffee provides in preventing arthritis can be attributed to its weight-control abilities, as regular coffee drinkers often have a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) compared to non-coffee drinkers with the same lifestyle and diet.
This is significant because obesity is a well-known factor linked to increased inflammation and damage to the joints.
Studies have shown that the more coffee, tea, or caffeine-rich beverages one consumes, the higher the caffeine levels in the blood, which is often associated with a lower BMI.
It’s no surprise that coffee contains beneficial compounds known to improve metabolism, support weight loss, and reduce fat.
Therefore, researchers suggest that maintaining a daily coffee habit can be a simple way to proactively protect one’s health.
Globally, the popularity of coffee can help alleviate the burden of obesity and joint inflammation, especially in the context of an aging population.
