According to experts, catfish is a freshwater fish that usually lives at the bottom of the water or burrows in mud. It has a long body, smooth skin, and a shape similar to an eel but shorter and smaller.
Notably, the nutritional value of catfish is equivalent to other freshwater fish, but it is highly regarded for its health benefits and medicinal properties. Additionally, catfish has special effects on individuals with weak health or sexual weakness, which is why it is loved by many.
Why is catfish known as “water ginseng”?
In folklore, catfish is always referred to as “water ginseng” and is considered a panacea for treating male sexual weakness. Especially, according to ancient medical documents, catfish is a medicinal herb with a sweet taste, neutral properties, and does not contain toxins that affect health. It also has higher nutrient content than chicken meat.
In traditional Eastern medicine as well as traditional Vietnamese medicine, catfish has been shown to help nourish the blood, detoxify the body, treat liver disease, yellowing of the skin, kidney weakness, etc. Its most prominent effect is on boosting sexual vitality and treating male sexual problems such as premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, impotence, etc.

Some catfish remedies
Treatment for male sexual weakness: Take 5-6 catfish, remove the fishy smell. Cut open the catfish, remove the intestines, and extract the meat while preserving the bones. Pour oil into a pot, use low heat to fry until the bones are soft, then add the catfish meat and fry. Next, add 300ml of alcohol or 600ml of water, a slice of ginger, simmer on low heat until the water reduces by half and turns milky. Take this liquid, add salt, pepper, and drink and eat the meat. In addition, people with decreased libido, mental and physical weakness, liver disease, poor appetite can use it continuously for several days.
Treatment for physical weakness: Take 250g of catfish and 50g of houttuynia cordata. Clean the catfish, remove all internal organs. Wrap the cleaned houttuynia cordata in a fabric, put it in a pot, add half a liter of water, and add enough salt. After boiling, simmer on low heat until the water is reduced by half, then remove the houttuynia cordata and eat the fish and drink the water. Eat once a day, continuously for 10 days to see results.
300 – 500g catfish, 100g peanuts, 300g brown rice, peanut oil or other vegetable oil, salt, soy sauce, sugar, onions, herbs… as needed.
Blood-nourishing catfish porridge: First, clean the rice, add a little salt and mix well. Boil water, add rice to cook porridge. Cut open the catfish, remove the spine, rinse, dry, then add peanut oil, salt, soy sauce, and sugar and mix well. When the porridge is almost done, add the catfish and cook until tender. When eating, add onions and herbs. It is good to eat this porridge daily for people with weak body, sexual weakness, liver disease, yellowing of the skin, etc.
