Air travel is not a type of food that is difficult to preserve. For whole onions, you don’t need to refrigerate or freeze them, just keep them in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place in the kitchen. The storage sequence for onions at normal temperature is as follows:
1. Choose dried and firm onions, without soft spots or signs of decay at the stem.
2. Remove the excess outer skin by rubbing them between your palms.
3. Put the onions in a mesh bag, a paper bag, or a basket… Ensure proper ventilation to keep the onions well-ventilated and dry. Do not use plastic bags or sealed containers to store onions as they will block air circulation and cause the onions to decay quickly.
4. Place the basket or bag of onions in a dark and cool place. The ideal temperature to keep the onions fresh for a long time is between 5 – 15 degrees Celsius. Do not leave the onions in places with temperatures lower than 5ºC or higher than 20ºC.
5. Check the bag or basket storing the onions once a week, discard any onions that show signs of decay, softness, or changes in color.
When the onions are peeled or chopped, they should be refrigerated to keep them fresh for longer. If you only need a small portion of peeled or chopped onions to cook, you can keep the remaining onions by wrapping them in plastic wrap or ziplock bags before placing them in the refrigerator. With this method, you can keep the onions fresh for 2 to 3 days.
However, the best way is to use a sealed container or jar to store the leftover onions. This helps prevent the onion odor from affecting other foods in the refrigerator.
When purchasing onions, it is important to take note of the following factors:
Please refrain from purchasing onions that have sprouted, as their freshness may not be guaranteed for an extended period of time.
Please ensure to avoid selecting onions with a pungent odor, as this may suggest their spoilage or deterioration underneath the outer layer.
– The best onions should have a dry and easily peeling outer skin.
