When it comes to the Lunar New Year, besides the colorful flowers, square sticky rice cake, and pickled carrot and daikon, one cannot forget the sweet and sugary candied fruits of the New Year. It is not just a food, but also holds a special meaning in the hearts of Vietnamese people.

When the weather gets cold, the Lunar New Year candies are fragrant, sweet, and have a rich flavor that goes well with a hot cup of tea. They are essential to welcome guests during the New Year. In the memories of many people from the 70s and 80s, Lunar New Year candies hold the traditional flavor of delicious gifts that many children dream of every Lunar New Year. The candies are still there, the stories of old New Year’s are still there, from the very old years.

Lunar New Year candies are made from various ingredients such as ginger, carrots, pumpkin, kumquat, etc. Although the candies are tasty, they are not suitable for everyone.

Obese individuals

Due to the nature of candies being coated with sugar, they are very sweet, and therefore not suitable for people who are overweight. If we eat too much, it can lead to eating less during main meals. The consequence is feeling tired because the body only receives energy from sugar, lacking protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals.

Diabetic individuals

Because Lunar New Year candies contain a lot of sugar, people with a history of diabetes should avoid eating them. If you really crave them, you can eat a small amount, but it should be eaten after the main meal and reduce the intake of carbohydrate in the previous main meal.

Pregnant women

Although the candies are made from fruits or vegetables, they have lost most of their vitamins and the main component of the candies is just sweet sugar, so it is not entirely beneficial for pregnant women.

Pregnant women need to choose foods that are balanced in nutrition, rich in vitamins and minerals, rather than just high in energy. If they eat a lot of candies, the mother will gain weight quickly but will not have the necessary nutrients for the baby’s growth, and may even increase the risk of gestational diabetes.

Children

Due to the high sugar content in Lunar New Year candies, young children with weak digestive systems should not eat too much. In addition, if children eat too much candies, they may feel full and not be able to eat the main meal, leading to a lack of nutrition.
