5 Reunited with Mother and Father – Nguyen Dinh Cuong
Reunited with Mother and Father – Nguyen Dinh Cuong
As I departed, I promised my mother and father,
That upon the nation’s reunification, I would return to build a home,
And that my wife would be as virtuous as the legendary “Co Tam,”
Bringing joy to my parents as they held their grandchildren.
But now, their hair has turned gray, and their teeth have grown long,
As they continue to wait for me at the crossroads, by the stream,
Wondering if I’m lost in the deep forest,
Suffering from malaria, or lacking salt and food.
In her dreams, my mother still sees me as a young man in my prime,
And my father still waits for me at the lunch table after a hard day’s work in the fields.
The heavens control the rain and sunshine,
While the elderly worry about countless things.
My parents’ eyes have grown dim,
And they fear they won’t recognize me when I return.
As they wait, their bodies wither away,
And they caress my photograph with fading hope.
But their faith in me gradually diminishes,
And they join me in the realm of eternal rest.
In the distant realm of Nirvana,
I return to my mother’s embrace, by the lotus pedestal.
She cherishes me as she did when I was an infant,
And once again, I am reunited with my mother and father.

In the beauty of our love, I recall a time long ago,
When you left without a word of farewell.
Night after night, I lay awake in silence,
Tears streaming down my cheeks in my dreams.
I understood your choice to answer the nation’s call,
As you bravely embarked on your patriotic mission.
Putting country before self, you set aside personal matters,
Determined to defeat the enemy and reunite our loved ones.
When liberation came, our soldiers marched triumphantly,
And the red flag of victory waved proudly over Saigon.
My face reflected both joy and sorrow,
Joy for our freedom, and sorrow for the many heroes we lost.
Brave young men and women became immortal martyrs,
Sacrificing their lives for our nation’s success.
Our country now stands tall,
But we remember the many losses that paved the way.

Beautiful Poem for July 27th
You left in the dead of night, shrouded in mist,
Carrying with you the bundle of my love.
The day you left, we made no plans to meet again,
So I asked when you would return.
You looked at me with uncertain eyes,
And replied with the image of a soldier.
For the sake of our shared love, you faced the perils of war,
And our rendezvous point was the distant riverbank.
But you never returned, and I remained alone,
As the mists of Buon Me Thuot enveloped the evening village.
Night after night, I endured the heartache of a soldier’s wife,
And the green of youth faded from my memory.
You left to bring peace to our homeland,
And your love remains with me forever.
