The best time to enjoy prawns (also known as shrimp) is in September-October. It is during the autumn season when prawns are fattier. The ones with eggs (roe) are even more delicious.
Among the various types of seafood, prawns, also known as small shrimps, boat shrimps, or hammer shrimps, are a tasty and nutritious dish. In the northern region, they are commonly called prawns.
Prawn meat is firmer and sweeter than shrimp, which is why it is preferred by food enthusiasts. Moreover, its price is quite reasonable, making it a convenient choice for meals.
Choosing fresh and delicious prawns is relatively straightforward, but unfortunately, not everyone knows how to do it. Therefore, Mr. Duy Truong – the owner of a seafood restaurant in Quy Nhon – has shared 4 things you need to pay immediate attention to when buying prawns.

1. Observe the appearance
When buying prawns, pay attention to the appearance of the prawn. The back of a fresh prawn is usually curved and flexible. So if they are always bending down, then these prawns are probably not fresh.
In addition, fresh prawns have bright eyes. If you look closely, they will emit a green light.
2. Observe the colors
Fresh prawns have a shiny emerald green color. When exposed to sunlight, they will appear slightly transparent and reflect a little light in shades of green.
On the other hand, if the prawns are dark in color and appear dull, they are not fresh.
3. Choose prawns with eggs
To choose prawns with eggs, hold the prawn in your hand and flip its belly up. If you see a reddish pink streak at the tail, then you should choose it immediately as these prawns have eggs.
In addition, just choose the ones that are still alive and feel firm to the touch.

4. Smell
You can lift the prawn up and smell it. Fresh prawns do not have a strange odor, which is normal. But if it has a fishy smell, then it is definitely spoiled and should not be purchased.
Special note when choosing prawns
– Do not choose prawns that are significantly cheaper than the average market price.
– If you want to bring prawns as a gift, boil them briefly and then refrigerate them before transporting.
How to store prawns
After selecting the prawns, Mr. Truong also advises on some preservation methods to maintain their freshness and quality:
Because prawns have sweet meat, many people buy them and store them in the freezer for later use in making soup. Some people prefer to peel the prawns, sauté them, and then cook the soup, while others leave the whole prawns intact and frozen, then pound them and filter them to mimic crab meat. This way, it saves defrosting time and avoids the hassle of peeling the shells, and the resulting soup is extremely delicious, without the need for seasoning and MSG.
However, you only need to briefly boil them and then put them in the refrigerator. They are easy to use for any dish whenever you want. However, the storage will be more ideal if you have vacuum bags. Prepare a few of them and put the prawns in before vacuuming them and placing them in the refrigerator!
