November 20th is Vietnam’s Teachers’ Day, a day to honor the education sector and for society to pay tribute to those working in this noble profession.

We send our warmest wishes to all teachers and express our deepest gratitude for their dedication to shaping future generations.

1Origin and Significance of Vietnam’s Teachers’ Day

In January 1946, an international teachers’ organization, FISE (Fédération International Syndicale des Enseignants), was established in Paris, France.

Three years later, in 1949, FISE issued the “Charter of Teachers” in Warsaw, Poland. This charter consisted of 15 chapters advocating for the fight against bourgeois and feudal education, as well as the construction of a better education system, including protecting the rights and interests of teachers, and emphasizing their responsibilities and importance.

In 1953, the Vietnam Education Union became a member of FISE, and this decision was made official during FISE’s conference in Warsaw from August 26 to 30, 1957.

November 20, 1958, marked the first celebration of the International Day of the Charter of Teachers, held in North Vietnam. A few years later, this day was also observed in several liberated regions of South Vietnam.

After the reunification of the country, November 20 became an annual tradition. In 1982, Vietnam’s Teachers’ Day was celebrated nationwide for the first time.

Origin and Significance of Vietnam’s Teachers’ Day

November 20 has long been a traditional day to commemorate the teaching profession in Vietnam. This is especially fitting for a nation with a strong tradition of valuing education and respecting teachers.

This day provides an opportunity for students, both current and former, to express their gratitude and appreciation to their teachers. Regardless of whether they are still in school or have moved on, on November 20, people across Vietnam reach out to their teachers with warm wishes and thoughtful gifts.
