Cooking rice is one of the activities we do for a lifetime. Even though nowadays there are electric rice cookers – the savior of every household – sometimes cooking rice still cannot avoid annoying and frustrating situations. Sometimes the rice is sticky, sometimes it is mushy, and sometimes it is undercooked.

Sticky rice has a solution, but what about undercooked rice? If you cook it again, there is a chance the rice will burn. So should you throw away the whole pot of rice or accept eating half-cooked rice? If you still believe that cooking the rice again is the only option, then you are mistaken. There is a faster and more economical way than throwing away the rice.

You can solve this problem with alcohol. Don’t worry, the rice cooker will not smell like alcohol and the rice will not be inedible, instead, the rice will be incredibly fragrant. First, as soon as you realize that the rice is undercooked, you need to stir the rice in the pot thoroughly. It’s better to use chopsticks to stir as the rice will be fluffier compared to when you use a spoon. After stirring the rice, you should transfer it to another pot and add white wine to the rice in a ratio of 1:10 (1 wine to 10 rice). Pour this mixture evenly into the rice pot and cook it again. Remember to adjust the heat to a medium level.

Cook until the alcohol has evaporated completely, and your rice pot will be evenly cooked and won’t have any alcohol smell.

You should also know that the main reason for undercooked or mushy rice is lack of water. This causes the rice to not absorb enough water, not expand properly, and not have the right temperature for even cooking. Therefore, you should check the water amount for the type of rice you are using. Additionally, it could also be a fault with the rice cooker. In that case, it would be best to get the rice cooker repaired.
