Tan Dunci, a nurse at the Clinical Toxicology Center of Chang Gung Hospital (Taiwan), who is also a home organizer expert, recently shared 5 principles for cleaning homes for the Lunar New Year, helping people avoid excessive pressure and fatigue with this task, and achieve twice the results with half the effort.

1. Get rid of old items

The first thing you need to do is discard, recycle, or sell items that are no longer used before cleaning your home. This will make your home more spacious, tidy, and organized, while also saving time and effort for cleaning.

2. Clean from top to bottom

When cleaning your home for the Lunar New Year, you should start from high areas and work your way down to low areas. For example, dust the cobwebs on the ceiling and top of cabinets first, and then proceed to wipe the tables, chairs, and sweep the house.

Clean from small areas to large areas, such as organizing drawers and the refrigerator first, and then clean the tabletop, living room, kitchen, etc. Also, sweep from inside to outside, for example, start from the bedroom and then move to the living room.

3. Dry cleaning before wet cleaning

Before wet cleaning, use a broom and a dry cloth to remove dust, and avoid using a wet cloth to wipe the surface directly. If you do so, the combination of dust and cleaning solution will create an unpleasant dirty mixture that spreads throughout the space.

While the floor, tables, chairs, etc. are still wet, you won’t notice any issues. But once the surface dries, you will see stains appear, and they might even be dirtier than before cleaning. This will require extra effort and time to clean again. Therefore, don’t skip the dry cleaning stage, or you might bring more frustration and work upon yourself.

4. Pay attention to ventilation

When cleaning your home for the Lunar New Year, first open the doors and windows to ventilate. This will make your home more airy and dry faster.

In addition to ventilation, you should also pay attention to lighting. If you find that the light bulbs are old, dim, and dull, it is best to replace them with new ones to make your home bright and lively in the new year.

5. Use cleaning solution

Using cleaning solutions will make the cleaning process easier and more effective, while also saving time and effort. However, when choosing a cleaning solution, you should select reputable brands and use them according to the instructions.

Moreover, for furniture surfaces or glass doors, it is best not to spray the cleaning solution directly onto the surface. This may leave residues on the surface, creating smudges. It is better to spray the cleaning solution on a clean cloth and then wipe.
