Coconut water is a familiar and popular drink in Vietnam, loved by many for its pure, natural quality and sweet, refreshing taste. In addition to its delicious flavor, coconut water also offers a plethora of health benefits, including reducing the risk of dehydration, promoting cardiovascular health, improving skin complexion, and boosting the immune system. There’s nothing quite like a fresh coconut drink on a hot day, but how long can you keep coconut water, and what’s the best way to store it?
1 How Long Does Coconut Water Last?
Fresh coconut water can be stored for up to one week (seven days) if it is consumed immediately after the coconut is harvested. During this time, it retains its optimal flavor, with the perfect balance of sweetness and natural refreshment.
To extend its shelf life, storing coconut water in the refrigerator is ideal. However, prolonged storage will inevitably affect its taste and quality. Over time, it may even spoil, leading to discomfort and fatigue for consumers.
2 Proper Storage Methods for Coconut Water
For coconuts injected with Metabisulfit Natri and wrapped in a protective layer, the shelf life can be extended to one to one-and-a-half months at a temperature of 5°C. Regular coconuts, on the other hand, can be stored for two to three weeks at a temperature of 1-4°C if they are peeled and 8°C if they are unpeeled. Storing coconuts in a cool, ventilated area can also keep them fresh for up to a week, although the quality may deteriorate.
Additionally, deep freezing at temperatures between -35 to -40°C or -18°C can further prolong the shelf life of coconut water. However, this method may affect the natural taste, and such coconuts tend to be more expensive.
3 Precautions When Drinking Coconut Water
– Avoid excessive consumption, such as drinking more than 3-4 coconuts per day or continuously for several days.
– It is not recommended to drink coconut water in the evening.
– Drinking large amounts of coconut water after being exposed to the sun can cause chills, fullness, fever, etc.
– People who engage in intense physical activities, such as athletes and sports enthusiasts, should refrain from consuming coconut water as it may lead to weakness in the arms and legs, negatively impact endurance, and reduce reflexes.
– Individuals with certain medical conditions, including those with a yin constitution (pale complexion, cold hands and feet, etc.), pregnant women in their first trimester, hemorrhoids patients, low blood pressure, or joint pain, should consult a doctor before consuming coconut water.
