When traveling or going out, a mobile phone and a charger are almost essential items that we cannot live without. However, if you happen to forget your phone charger, don’t worry too much. In an urgent situation, when your phone runs out of battery, you can charge it using your TV.

Most newer TVs today have USB ports, so you can use them to charge your phone. All you need is a USB cable, which you can borrow, and you can charge your phone.

In general, the USB 3.0 interface can provide an output power of 5V/0.9A, which is almost equivalent to Apple’s charger. The USB 2.0 interface is weaker but still has an output power of 5V/0.5A. According to network tests, when the battery of an iPhone 7 is about 15%, using the original Apple charging cable provides around 2.5W of power. And if you switch to a different charging cable with an identification chip, the power can immediately increase to around 6W, even higher than the original charger!

However, using the USB port on your TV to charge your mobile phone requires turning on the TV, which can affect your sleep at night. Moreover, for some reasons, some TVs do not charge the phone even though they have USB ports.

Although you can charge your phone with a TV, you should not underestimate the risks involved.

In fact, besides TVs, set-top boxes (devices that act as intermediaries between the signal source and the TV) are also often equipped with USB ports. When you cannot borrow a charger, using the set-top box temporarily is also not a problem. The USB interface of the TV box is generally 5V/500mA, while the power adapter of a smartphone is usually 5V/1A-2A, so charging your phone using the TV box will take longer.

Note that depending on the type of mobile phone, we may need to turn on the power switch of the TV or TV box. But also, do not use this charging method too often because ultimately, it is an emergency solution. Using the USB interface of the TV or the TV box to charge the phone too frequently can cause the TV/STB circuit board or the mobile phone to burn out. Because different electrical currents may occur or the design of the TV’s USB interface may not meet the standards for long-term phone charging.
