iPhone is known for being one of the most durable smartphones you can buy today. It’s no surprise considering Apple’s long-term support, sturdy design, readily available replacement components…
The average lifespan of an iPhone
In a report by analyst Horace Dediu, the average lifespan of an iPhone is about 3 years. Depending on usage, an Apple “iPhone” can last up to 6-7 years.
A survey shows that the average lifecycle of older iPhone models from the 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, X series is about 4-5 years. With the newer models starting from the 11 Series, most users can use their devices for 5-6 years. Some individuals even choose to purchase Apple’s device protection plan, which helps reduce repair costs and extends the device’s lifespan.
Using good habits will help prolong the durability of your iPhone
One of the habits that iPhone users should adopt is proper charging.
Apple recommends charging the iPhone battery in a way that preserves up to 80% of its original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles. A charge cycle is defined as depleting the battery’s power from 0 to 100%.

If the maximum battery capacity decreases below 80% (battery depletion), it is recommended to replace the battery. This is because a degraded battery can cause lag and impact the overall user experience.
In addition, you can utilize the “Optimized Battery Charging” feature on your iPhone to increase battery lifespan, enhancing the device’s durability.
Apple recently published an article explaining “Optimized Battery Charging,” helping users understand this feature and providing instructions on maximizing the performance and lifespan of the iPhone battery, especially on the latest models.
According to Apple, “Optimized Battery Charging” is designed to minimize battery degradation and improve battery lifespan by adjusting the iPhone’s charging time. When enabled, the iPhone charges up to 80% and calculates the optimal time to complete the remaining charge under certain circumstances, such as overnight charging.
For iPhone models 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and enable “Optimized Battery Charging.”
For iPhone 15 models, access Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Charging Optimization. You will find options for Optimized Battery Charging, 80% Limit, and None. Choose “Optimized Battery Charging.”
To improve battery life on iPhone 15 models, Apple introduced a new option called “80% Limit,” allowing you to limit the charging capacity to 80%. Once the threshold is reached, the iPhone stops charging. When the battery level drops to 75%, the charging process resumes until it reaches 80%.
This feature is beneficial for prolonging battery lifespan, making the device more durable. However, not all users may be aware of its existence.
