On February 2nd, the sky over Hanoi was covered with a thick layer of fog and humidity, making the air quality the worst in the world.
In the following days, Hanoi and the northern provinces are also forecasted to continue experiencing high humidity.
As the Lunar New Year approaches and the festive season begins, the northern region enters a period of high humidity. The damp and drizzly weather makes houses constantly wet, smelly, and greatly affects daily life and activities.
To reduce the moisture on the floor, many people often think that turning on a fan can help evaporate the water, just like when cleaning the house. However, in reality, fans only dry the floor in normal weather conditions, not in high humidity weather. The water vapor generated by the fan will quickly condense on the walls and furniture, meaning it will still linger in your house instead of being removed.
But don’t worry, this article will help you!
1. Always keep the doors closed
In humid weather, the floor becomes damp and the air becomes stuffy, causing many people to open windows and doors in an attempt to let the air circulate and dry the house faster. However, the humid wind blowing into the house will only make the living space more damp.
It is best to limit opening doors. Find ways to seal the gaps in your house and minimize the exchange of humid air to reduce sweating on the floor.
2. Clean the house with dry rags
Cleaning the house with wet rags is the common method that everyone uses when cleaning the house (or wet areas). However, if you don’t want your house to remain damp, use dry rags or highly absorbent cloths to wipe away the excess water.
3. Use dehumidifiers
Instead of fans, air conditioners are the real “lifesavers” for your house in humid weather.
If you have a two-way air conditioner, set it to the dehumidifier mode. The air conditioner will remove the moisture in the environment, ensure air circulation, and ensure the health of the residents, especially in families with young children.
4. Use moisture-absorbing materials
Currently, there are many types of dehumidifiers available on the market, diverse in origin and design. If possible, don’t hesitate to buy one of these machines as they will be a valuable assistant during humid days, helping keep your house dry, fresh, and clean.
In addition, you can find many other moisture-absorbing materials such as charcoal, lime, old newspapers, or dry towels… These materials are inexpensive and easy to use. You can place a small bundle of charcoal in the room, under a chair, etc. to help absorb moisture. Note that you should only use dry charcoal, never burn it.
5. Prevent mold and bacteria by using hot water
If you use chopsticks, spoons made of bamboo or wood in your house, be careful, as they are easily moldy on damp days. If you don’t know how to properly disinfect them, these utensils can harm the health of the family members.
After washing the dishes, rinse them with hot water as a final step and let them air dry or store them with enough space to ensure cleanliness.
It is best to use a dishwasher to dry and disinfect them thoroughly.
6. Store electronic devices properly
For electronic devices in the house, avoid placing them close to the walls to prevent electrical leakage, which is very dangerous. Electrical appliances should be elevated from the floor and about 15 cm away from the wall.
Electronic devices that are easily affected by humidity, such as cameras, lenses… should be stored in a dedicated box with silica gel or in a regular box with a moisture-absorbing bag inside. If your electronic devices are malfunctioning due to humidity, you can use a hairdryer to dry them immediately.
7. Eliminate the smell of humid weather
Humid weather conditions often create a damp and musty smell that makes us uncomfortable. Concentrated floor cleaner is the “solution” to this difficult problem.
In addition, essential oils are a must-have for your home if you want to maintain a fresh and pleasant living environment and prevent damp and musty odors.
To prevent musty odors caused by humid weather, you can use scented essential oils in corners of the house. Use light scents like lavender or citrus to create the most pleasant fragrance in your home.
You can also light scented candles in the living room. The burning candles will absorb the musty, moldy, and even cigarette smoke odors in the room. It also creates a cozy atmosphere in your house.
