Regretting Not Knowing Sooner: My Neighbor Stocks Half a Bowl of Rice in the Closet

All you need is a bowl of white rice, some essential oils, a dish, a cloth, and an elastic band.

If you already know the trick of putting smartphones in rice, you may know that this method works effectively because rice absorbs moisture. This is useful information because sometimes even your closet can be damp. Maybe your house is slightly humid or you have put freshly washed clothes in the closet even though they are not completely dry. The humidity will make your clothes smell musty and of course, you do not want your closet to be damp and moldy, right?

Because rice absorbs moisture and also acts as an air freshener. A small tip is to add a few drops of essential oil to the rice, and your closet will smell pleasant! With this method, you don’t need to buy expensive air fresheners or fragrant bags.

How to do it:

All you need is a bowl of white rice, a few drops of essential oil, a bowl, a breathable fabric (like an old t-shirt), and a rubber band. You pour 15-20 drops of essential oil into the rice bowl. You take a breathable fabric (like an old t-shirt) and cover the rice bowl with it. Then, you use a rubber band to tightly secure the fabric.

You place the rice bowl somewhere in the closet where children or pets cannot see it. After a few months, you will need to replace the bowl.

Stuffing everything into the washing machine

Your family only has 2-3 members. Yet, you own an 8kg washing machine. To save electricity, water, time, and… laziness, you tend to collect clothes for the entire week and squeeze them all into the machine, set it to the basic washing option, the highest water level, and let the machine handle everything.

As a consequence, you will receive white clothes turning into a grayish color after just a few washes, trousers becoming fuzzy and full of lint, and lace items becoming torn or frayed…

Instead, spend another 10 minutes to do the following: sort the clothes by color, separate white clothes and black trousers. Then, wash them with the appropriate washing settings.

Currently, in supermarkets, there is a “magic tool” for washing lace items called a laundry bag. With these bags, your lace items will never be torn or frayed.

Properly storing clothes

For clothes that you rarely wear such as suits, seasonal outfits, evening gowns, etc., you tend to neatly fold them and store them at the bottom of the closet or hang them in a hidden corner. That is a mistake because those hidden corners are always ideal environments for ants, cockroaches, and mold to thrive.

You should wipe them dry, clean, put in moisture absorbers, and regularly check if the clothes are safe or not.

Using nylon bags to wrap and store clothes that you don’t wear often is a habit of many people, but it is not effective. Nylon bags prevent air circulation, causing clothes to have a bad smell and easily develop molds. Fabric bags or mesh bags are a better choice. If possible, you can invest in a mini vacuum sealer to clean the air and prevent molds and insects.

In addition, this is also a space-saving solution for your closet instead of stacking different types of protecting bags.

Ironing clothes is an art

You always use the same ironing setting for all types of clothes, from jeans to T-shirts, because you think that ironing at any temperature will ensure that the clothes are flat and not burnt. In fact, there must be a reason why manufacturers set different ironing levels for cotton, wool, linen, etc. because each type of fabric can only withstand a certain temperature.

If you set the ironing board at a temperature lower than required, it will cause the fabric fibers to shrink and the clothes will not be straight, and setting it too high will make the fabric shrink without you realizing it. So, remember to observe and choose the appropriate ironing setting.
