Black bean sprouts, or giá đậu đen, are a nutritious treat packed with benefits for your health and your skin. They’re a great source of fiber and help lower cholesterol levels too. Making them at home is simple and fun!
Ingredients
- Black beans: 100g
- Large bamboo leaves: 15-20 (banana leaves can be substituted)
- Warm water at 40-50°C
- Plastic basket/colander
- Bamboo mat or ceramic plate
How to Make Black Bean Sprouts
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
Gather and prepare your ingredients
Start by sorting through the black beans, removing any damaged, shriveled, or broken beans. Rinse the beans with water and soak them for 2-3 hours in warm water to encourage germination.
While the beans are soaking, wash the bamboo leaves and cut them into 50-60cm lengths. Allow the leaves to dry.
Step 2: Start Sprouting
After the beans have soaked, check to see if the shells have started to crack open. If they have, drain the beans in a colander and let them air dry.
In the colander, create a layer of bamboo leaves, then add half of the beans. Spread them out evenly and add another layer of leaves. Repeat this process until all the beans are used up, ending with a final layer of leaves on top.
Use the bamboo mat or a ceramic plate to press down firmly on the layers. This helps the sprouts grow plumper and prevents the beans from moving around or falling out. If you don’t have a bamboo mat, a ceramic plate will do the trick!
Soak the entire colander in a basin of water for about 5 minutes to ensure even moisture. Then, drain the water and let it air dry.
Water the sprouts 3-4 times a day and keep the colander in a dark place, like a cabinet, or cover it with a black plastic bag to block out light. This encourages faster germination.
Each night, soak the sprouts in water for about 5 minutes, then drain and let them air dry. Repeat this process for three days.
Step 3: Harvest
After three days, your black bean sprouts will be ready to harvest! They should be plump and evenly sprouted. Rinse them thoroughly and they’re ready to be used in delicious recipes like black bean sprout stir-fry with beef or a refreshing cucumber and sprout salad.
It’s that easy to make your own nutritious black bean sprouts at home! Add this simple recipe to your cookbook and enjoy healthy, tasty meals. Good luck and happy sprouting!
