September 2nd is Vietnam’s National Day, commemorating the day when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi.

On September 2, 1945, as the Declaration of Independence was being read, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born. Initially, September 2nd was referred to as “Vietnamese Independence Day,” while August 19th was celebrated as National Day. However, in 1954, September 2nd was officially designated as Vietnam’s National Day.

Additionally, it is worth noting that President Ho Chi Minh passed away in Hanoi on September 2, 1969, at the age of 79. To avoid coinciding with the National Day celebrations, his death was announced on September 3rd. It wasn’t until 20 years later, on August 19, 1989, that the Political Bureau officially announced that he had passed away on September 2nd.

Vietnam’s National Day on September 2nd

National Day on September 2, 2024, will fall on a Monday, corresponding to the 30th of July in the lunar calendar. According to the 2019 Labor Code, Article 112, Clause 1 and Clause 3, National Day is observed with a two-day holiday on September 2nd and either the preceding or following day.

This year, the National Day holiday will be from August 31st to September 3rd, 2024, including two weekends and two holidays.
