Households across the country are continuing to seek different ways to reduce their costs in the context of the cost of living crisis.
Electricity is one of the main reasons that consistently affects households and washing machines contribute a large amount to this cost.
Therefore, many households may be looking for ways to cut costs when doing laundry. To address this issue, Vivien Fodor, Director of the Indesit household appliance brand, has shared 5 simple tricks to help households save energy costs when using a washing machine.
1. Wash at low temperature
Washing with hot water can consume 80 – 90% of the electricity usage in each washing cycle, meaning that one of the best ways to save laundry is to reduce the temperature.
A washing cycle at a temperature of 30 degrees is enough to clean and only uses about 40% energy compared to a washing cycle with a higher temperature. By doing this, you can save 40% – 50% of energy.
Vivien recommends: “Washing with cold water is less electricity-consuming, which allows you to save hundreds of dollars per year.”
If you’re worried that washing with cold water may not remove stubborn stains, this expert also suggests: “Try soaking clothes in lemon juice and salt solution before putting them in the washing machine.”
2. Avoid peak energy hours
The expert explains why there are 3 time slots in a day when running the washing machine of households becomes “more expensive” if they apply a “time of use” tariff.
Vivien says: “The most expensive time to run a washing machine is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.”
“You can save energy by using a washing machine by maximizing the delayed start function to schedule it to run outside of peak energy hours.”
Electricity costs become more expensive during that time when people finish work, cook dinner, and do laundry, leading to increased electricity demand. This means that many providers increase the price per kilowatt-hour during this peak time.
3. The larger the size/capacity of the washing machine, the more electricity it consumes
The laundry expert continues to give advice on how households should consider the size/capacity of the washing drum when buying a new washing machine.
She explains: “A larger machine will use more energy than machines with smaller capacities. A 5kg capacity is better for single people, while a 10kg capacity is the perfect choice for a larger family.”
“If you have a large capacity machine, you can make the most of its capacity by running fewer washing cycles, thereby saving energy and water” – Vivien emphasizes.
However, regardless of the size of the machine, always wait until you accumulate enough clothes to wash before starting a cycle.
4. Pre-treat stubborn stains on clothes before washing is necessary
Vivien says: “Keeping the washing machine clean is the number one priority if you want to ‘save repair costs’ and ensure its long life.”
She instructs: “To completely handle any stains, add specialized stain remover to hot water once every 3 months.
Hot water washing is usually more expensive to run but this one time cycle can help you save money in the long run by maintaining your existing machine.”
5. Never overload the machine
Although putting more clothes into your washing machine may seem tempting to reduce the total number of cycles, fully loading the machine may not properly clean your clothes.
Moreover, overloading can even bend the drum of the washing machine or damage the motor, which will eventually require repair or replacement.
The best rule of thumb is to ensure that you can still see the top surface of the washing drum when the machine is full. The amount of clothing in the machine should ideally be filled up to the level just below your thumb’s distance from the top surface of the drum.
