Nowadays, traveling or working abroad is becoming more common. However, how to still use telecommunication services domestically while abroad is a concern for many people. The answer is the roaming feature – a service that allows you to use the same mobile phone number in different countries. So, let’s find out what roaming is and how to use this service with FPT Shop in the following article!

What is Roaming?

Roaming is a feature that allows users to use mobile telecommunication services abroad with the same phone number and SIM card registered in their home country.

Specifically, when users travel or work abroad with their SIM card from their home country, they can still use calling, messaging, and 3G/4G services of domestic network providers without changing the SIM card or phone number.

This can be done thanks to the cooperation between network providers in the home country and those in other countries. As a result, users can use telecommunication services continuously when moving between regions and countries.

Roaming brings convenience to users when traveling and helps network providers expand their service coverage globally.

Who should use roaming services?

Roaming services are mainly used by people who frequently travel or need to work abroad. With roaming services, they can continue to use their mobile services without having to buy local SIM cards or relying solely on Wi-Fi. However, users need to pay attention to the costs incurred from using roaming services, as prices may vary depending on the network provider and the country they are in.

What are the benefits of using roaming services?

Here are some key benefits that users can receive when using the roaming feature on their phones:

  • Continuous connectivity: Roaming services help users maintain communication through calls, messages, and internet access even when they are outside the coverage of their familiar mobile networks. This is especially useful when traveling internationally.
  • Convenient use of personal devices: Roaming allows users to continue using their phone numbers and devices, reducing the hassle of buying and installing new SIM cards. This helps them easily access familiar applications and contacts.
  • Access to important services: Roaming ensures uninterrupted access to important services such as online banking, location-based apps, and emergency services, providing a sense of security in unfamiliar areas.
  • Cost and time savings: Compared to buying local SIM cards, roaming can save time and effort for users, especially during short trips or when moving between multiple countries.
  • Flexible connection options: Many network providers offer flexible roaming packages, allowing users to choose services that suit their usage needs, from limited packages to unlimited packages.

How to activate roaming services on your phone

In general, activating international roaming services on your phone is a simple process. You can follow these steps:

For Android phones

Step 1: On the home screen of your phone, find and tap the Settings icon. This icon is usually in the phone’s app menu and has a gear or wrench-like shape.

Step 2: In the Settings window, scroll down and find the SIM & mobile network section. Tap here to open the connectivity settings.

Step 3: In the SIM & mobile network section, find and tap the Data roaming option.

Step 4: In the Data roaming section, tap to enable data roaming mode.

Step 5: Confirm the activation of data roaming when prompted by the network provider. You have now successfully activated the roaming feature on Android.

Note: Some options may have different names depending on the operating system interface on your phone. For example, the SIM card and network management section on Samsung phones may be labeled as Connections.

For iPhone (iOS)

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone. The settings icon looks like a gear or wrench.

Step 2: Find and tap the Mobile option.

Step 3: In the Mobile Data section, turn on the Mobile Data switch.

Step 4: Then, tap Cellular Data Options.

Step 5: Activate the Data Roaming option and confirm when prompted by your phone.

Now you have successfully activated the roaming feature on your iPhone. When abroad, you can use data services with roaming charges from the network provider.

Costs of using roaming services

When using roaming services abroad, users will have to pay a certain fee to the network provider. Specifically:

  • International calls: Users will be charged for minutes of calls, with fees ranging from 3000-5000 VND per minute.
  • International messages: Fees range from 800-1500 VND per message.
  • Using international 3G/4G: Fees are usually based on the data package that users have subscribed to. For example, 20,000 VND for 100MB.

Therefore, to save costs when using roaming services, users should purchase suitable roaming packages before traveling abroad.

Notes when using roaming services

There are some notes for you when using roaming services:

  • Check the supported roaming areas of the network provider.
  • Activate the service before traveling abroad.
  • Purchase suitable roaming packages according to your usage needs.
  • Limit the use of services with high fees.
  • Turn off mobile data when not necessary to avoid unintentional network access and charges.
