Coffee

Coffee is one of the best drinks that can help keep your liver healthy. Studies have shown that drinking coffee protects the liver from disease, even in people at higher risk.

Another study in 2016 found that drinking coffee reduces the risk of liver fibrosis and damage in people with chronic liver disease. Researchers have shown that drinking 3 cups of coffee per day reduces the risk of death in liver disease patients.

Green tea

A 2020 review of 15 studies by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that green tea reduces liver enzyme levels in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

A 2017 review found that people who drink green tea have a lower risk of developing liver cancer. Those who drink 4 or more cups per day have the lowest risk.

However, people with liver problems should be cautious and consult a doctor before consuming green tea daily.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit contains naringenin and naringin, antioxidant compounds that naturally protect the liver by reducing inflammation and protecting cells.

An analysis in 2023 shared by Healthline also revealed that these antioxidant compounds help reduce the progression of liver fibrosis.

In addition, grapefruit can also promote liver health by preventing damage and inflammation.

Dr. Mai Viet from the National Institute of Nutrition mentioned that besides grapefruit, tropical fruits like oranges and lemons are rich in vitamin C and antioxidant compounds. When they enter the body, they form detoxifying enzymes that eliminate cancer-causing agents. Consuming these fruits appropriately and sufficiently will always keep the liver clean and healthy, thus preventing cancer.

Garlic

Garlic contains precious allicin, which helps the liver activate enzymes to eliminate toxins from the body. It is a powerful antioxidant, antibiotic, and antifungal agent.

In addition, selenium present in garlic is very good for cleansing the liver. It can activate liver enzymes and naturally remove toxic substances from the body.

Blueberries, cranberries

These two fruits contain anthocyanin, an antioxidant compound. A 2021 study by the NIH showed that supplementing with cranberries for 6 months improved the condition of fatty liver.

Blueberry extract has been proven to inhibit the growth of liver cancer cells in human studies.

Grapes

Red grapes and purple grapes are rich in beneficial plant compounds that promote liver health. A 2020 study on mice showed that grapes and grape juice reduce inflammation, prevent cell damage, increase antioxidant levels, and protect liver cells.

Apple

According to Dr. Mai Viet, apples contain high levels of pectin, which helps cleanse toxins in the digestive tract, supports the liver in eliminating toxins from the body. When the digestive tract contains fewer toxins, the liver becomes healthier.

Beetroot

This root vegetable increases oxygen in the body by improving the quality of blood. It stimulates bile flow, breaks down toxins, and improves enzyme activity. Vitamin C and fiber-rich vegetables cleanse the digestive system, promoting a healthy liver.

Dr. Mai Viet further shared: “Beetroot juice has the effect of preventing heavy metals, reducing fatigue, helping detoxify the liver, and preventing the formation of fat layers.”
