Specialized detergent is not only a great “tool” for easily removing “stubborn” stains, but it can also clean grill racks, restore baking trays,… Basically, there is nothing to worry about when using detergent, but to use it safely, you still need to pay attention to the following 6 things:
1. Don’t use it in a self-cleaning oven
Using detergent in a self-cleaning oven can corrode the special enamel coating of the oven. If you have a self-cleaning oven (not to be confused with a regular oven’s self-cleaning cycle), read the instructions carefully to know which products are safe for cleaning.
2. Don’t think you can clean everything in the oven with detergent
When using detergent to clean the inside of the oven, you need to avoid some parts of the oven to avoid damage. Do not clean the heating elements on the top or bottom of the appliance and keep away from the gaskets, as the detergent can degrade them and remove the airtight seal.
3. Don’t use it without protection
Detergents do a great job of dealing with tough residues in your oven. All those things are organic matter – just like your skin. To protect your hands from the corrosive nature of oven cleaner chemicals, wear rubber gloves. You might even consider wearing safety goggles or some other form of eye protection.
Remember to wear gloves when cleaning the oven.
4. Don’t use it without ventilation
Detergents can also irritate the respiratory tract and can have a significant impact on your health if inhaled. Remember to turn on the exhaust hood and open windows to ventilate the air when in contact with fumes.
5. Don’t use it around sensitive people or pets
Make sure to take preventive measures and do not use the product around people with asthma or other respiratory issues. The smell of detergents can also be harmful to pets – especially birds.
6. Don’t keep it in an easily accessible place
To put it frankly, detergent is very dangerous and should be kept out of reach of children. Even if you don’t have pets or children in the house, you still need to take precautions.
It is best to keep it out of reach or safely store it behind a child-proof cabinet.
