How to Peel a Pomelo

The pomelo fruit you buy usually has a narrow top. For the tall part, use a knife and cut about 1cm off. This part only has the rind, so you don’t have to worry about cutting into the inner pomelo flesh.

After removing the pomelo’s oily part, you can use a fruit peeler to cut along the skin around the pomelo and lightly score a few lines to peel the pomelo skin.

Now take a spoon and insert it inside the pomelo skin to separate the flesh from the peel. Do this slowly and carefully to avoid breaking the pomelo segments inside. This method will make it easier for you to peel the pomelo without hurting your hands.

Next, take a nylon thread, thread it between the pomelo segments, and press down to separate the pomelo segments.

After that, take a toothpick to peel off the pithy layer outside the pomelo segments, removing the pithy layer will give you intact pomelo segments, just arrange them on a plate and you’re done.

Simple Way to Peel Pomelo

If you don’t want to peel the pomelo in the above way, refer to this method.

First, use a paring knife to make a circle around the pomelo. Choose a path that the cut line touches near the pomelo segments but not too deep to avoid cutting into the fruit flesh, making the pomelo watery and difficult to peel. This step requires dexterity.

After circling the peel, use the strength of your thumb to separate and insert your finger into the pomelo peel and slowly remove the peel along the cut line.

Gradually peel until you have peeled off half of the pomelo peel.

Do the same with the other half. Then, you just need to separate the pomelo segments and remove them. You can arrange the peeled pomelo segments on the pomelo peel for a beautiful presentation.

This peeling method is suitable for types of pomelo such as Dien pomelo, green-skinned pomelo, Doan Hung pomelo, red Phuc Kien pomelo… After buying the pomelo, let it sit for 5-7 days to become more watery. Then you can easily apply this method.

If the pomelo peel is still fresh and the pith is thick, using your thumb to peel it will be painful and more difficult to do.

Lazy Way to Peel Pomelo

This is a trendy method on the internet. Instead of separating the peel from the segments, you will cut the pomelo horizontally like cutting an orange or lemon.

First, use a knife to cut off the ends of the pomelo, close to the segments. If you don’t see the pomelo segments exposed, you can cut further into the inside.

Now you just need to cut the pomelo in half horizontally.

After cutting in half, make a small cut along the boundary between the pomelo segments and the white pith.

Use your hand to gently break the pomelo segments apart. With this method, you can easily remove the pithy layer of the pomelo segments.

This method is also suitable for pomelos with thick peels like green-skinned pomelo, Nam Roi pomelo…

Good luck with these pomelo peeling tips.
