This is the first case in Vietnam to be treated for thumb injuries both functionally and aesthetically.
According to Prof. Dr. Son, previously, the treatment method for these injuries was simply shortening the finger by closing the stump and there was no nail. With the new technique, doctors used a flap of skin including part of the nail and the thumb pad, along with a feeding blood vessel and transferred it to the damaged part of the thumb.
The success of this case opens up a conservation treatment for thumb injuries because this finger plays an important role in the function of the hand, while ensuring the highest aesthetics is to restore the original shape of the finger.

It is a surgical procedure where a toenail is transplanted to replace a damaged or missing fingernail.
This procedure is ideal for those who have lost a fingernail due to trauma or infection, or for those who have congenital nail disorders. It can also be an option for people who are unhappy with the appearance of their fingernails.
The surgery involves taking a toenail that is closest in size and shape to the desired fingernail. The donor toenail is then carefully removed, along with a small amount of skin and nail bed. This graft is transplanted to the finger, and the blood vessels and nerves are carefully reconnected. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes about two hours.
The main benefit is the restoration of a natural-looking fingernail. The transplanted toenail will function and appear like a normal fingernail, allowing the patient to regain confidence in their appearance. It also provides protection to the finger and allows for better dexterity.
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects. These may include infection, bleeding, nerve damage, and scarring. There is also a small chance that the body may reject the transplanted nail. However, the procedure is generally safe and effective when performed by a qualified surgeon.
After the surgery, the patient will need to keep the finger immobilized for a few weeks to ensure proper healing. They may experience some pain, swelling, and bruising, which can be managed with medication. It is important to keep the surgical site clean and dry during the healing process. Most people can return to their normal activities within a month.
The foot nail transplant surgery for fingernails is a relatively new procedure and may not be widely available in all regions. It is important to consult with a qualified surgeon to discuss the availability and suitability of this procedure for your specific case.
