With the extreme heat currently, electricity demand is significantly rising. According to data from the National Power System Dispatch Center (A0), the system’s peak capacity on May 28th did not surpass the late-April peak of 47,670 MW, the highest in history.

However, May 28th recorded a new national record for electricity consumption, reaching 1,0019 billion kWh. This is the first time that the country’s daily electricity consumption has surpassed the 1-billion-kWh threshold.

In the North, although the weather has been hot and humid recently, it has not yet reached the peak of the heatwave. Electricity consumption in the North has increased in both capacity and production in recent days. This indicates that electricity consumption in the North may continue to rise, putting more pressure on power supply during the upcoming peak heat periods.

Such electricity consumption has also led to a surge in electricity bills for many households and agencies. To reduce electricity costs during the hot season, Mr. Dang Nguyen Phuong, Head of Business of the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC), has suggested some energy-saving measures.

Utilize greenery to cool spaces

First, increase indoor greenery. Potted plants can help cool the air, improve well-being, and reduce the impact of harsh sunlight.

Use curtains to reduce heat

Families can also use curtains to block out sunlight. Drawing curtains during the day keeps the indoor space cooler. Choose neutral-colored curtains with a white plastic-coated fabric layer to reduce temperature; this can reduce heat by up to 33%.

Avoid peak hours

Limit the simultaneous use of multiple electrical appliances during peak hours. Between 9:30 AM and 11:20 AM and between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM, only use essential appliances with energy-saving certifications.

Take advantage of the cool night breeze

An effective method is to use windows to let in the cool night air. When the night temperature drops significantly, opening windows while sleeping can utilize the natural breeze to cool the space without running the air conditioner all night.

Operate cooling appliances at moderate frequencies and temperatures

Changing habits regarding cooling appliances is also essential. For air conditioners, increasing the temperature by 1 degree Celsius can save 2-3% of electricity. Set the temperature above 26 degrees Celsius during the day, and consider turning it on for a while or turning it off at night to open windows and let in the outside air. As for fans, unplug the remote control and turn them off when not in use.

Use the refrigerator efficiently

Using the refrigerator efficiently also helps save energy. Place the refrigerator at least 10 cm away from the wall and maintain an internal temperature of 3-6 degrees Celsius, with the freezer set between -15 and -18 degrees Celsius. Avoid frequent opening of the refrigerator door, as each time it is opened, the refrigerator has to work harder to balance the temperature, wasting energy.

Use energy-efficient electrical appliances

Finally, when purchasing new electrical appliances, pay attention to the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER). The higher this ratio, the more energy-efficient the appliance. Therefore, choose appliances labeled “Energy Saving” to ensure optimal performance.

Regularly clean appliances for improved cooling efficiency

Regularly cleaning electrical appliances is a significant way to save energy. This improves their performance, making lights brighter and fans more potent. As a result, fewer lights and fans may be needed while still maintaining cooling and lighting effectiveness.

Unplug electrical appliances when not in use

Additionally, unplugging electrical appliances when not in use is essential. Even when turned off, devices like computers, TVs, and stereos still consume electricity. While this consumption is not significant, it can add up over time. Therefore, unplugging these devices when not in use is an effective way to reduce electricity costs.

Make use of natural light

Furthermore, utilizing natural light helps reduce electricity consumption in the home. Installing energy-saving light bulbs is also a smart solution. Using LED lights instead of incandescent bulbs reduces temperature and saves energy.
