In August 1945, as World War II was nearing its end, this presented an opportunity for our revolution. On the morning of August 19, 1945, the military and people gathered at the Hanoi Opera House for a massive rally unprecedented in history and quickly took control of Hanoi. This victory in the capital became a driving force, empowering the struggles for liberation in other provinces and cities.
The people rejoiced as the General Uprising succeeded.
At that time, the armed forces of the Liberation Committee in the North, the Reconnaissance Committee in the Central region, and the National Self-Defense Committee in the South, although bearing different names, shared the same mission of maintaining security and order. These organizations were the predecessors of today’s Vietnam People’s Public Security Forces. Hence, August 19th became the Traditional Day of the Vietnam People’s Public Security Forces.
