A recent research report by The Mirror revealed that 58% of people are trying to save on their living costs, including throwing away less food (35%) and buying more discounted or yellow-labeled items (45%) after the climate change action group WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) found that they waste £60 (almost 1.6 million VND) per month on food waste.

Meanwhile, a study by Sainsbury’s supermarket chain showed that 36% of consumers discover a product has gone off or spoiled before they have a chance to eat it.

Only 1 in 10 people know that eggs can actually be frozen, and the top 10 most wasted items are bread, milk, salad, cucumbers, potatoes, tomatoes, yogurt, carrots, onions, and eggs.

To help shoppers save up to £720 (around 19.68 million VND) per year, Sainsbury’s recently introduced their own unique open-freeze store concept, highlighting how shoppers can freeze their food in innovative ways to save money and reduce waste.

This concept looks like a regular Sainsbury’s fridge from the outside, but inside, customers are greeted with frozen grocery items they normally buy fresh.

Customers will see stacked shelves of everyday items like fruits and vegetables, milk, meat, fish, and baked goods – but everything will be frozen. From frozen eggs to herb blends in water in ice cube trays,… This innovative approach aims to inspire the British about how food can be frozen to help reduce waste and save money.

In addition, Sainsbury’s supermarket chain has published a list of items that shoppers can keep in the freezer.

Dairy products

– Cheese: After grating, cheese can be stored in the freezer in bags or containers for use in meals.

– Yogurt: Instead of wasting near-expiry yogurt, just pour it onto a parchment-lined tray, sprinkle some leftover fruit on top, freeze it and you have a refreshing snack.

– Eggs: Fresh eggs can be frozen, just crack them into a lidded container, and yolks and whites can be separated if desired.

Fruits

– Pineapple: Many families often don’t finish a whole pineapple. So if you slice it and freeze it, you can reuse it when needed.

– Blueberries: Any type of berries can be frozen, and you can easily add them to smoothies, desserts, or cookies.

– Grapes: Instead of throwing away leftovers, you can freeze grapes, they make a refreshing and easy-to-eat snack.

Vegetables

– Sweet peppers: Cut before freezing and you’ll find that stir-fries using frozen sweet peppers are also very flavorful.

– Herbs: Chop herbs, put them in small compartments of an ice cube tray, and drizzle with a little oil.

– Zucchini: Slice thinly before freezing. Never freeze a whole vegetable.

Meat and fish

– Ground meat: Many people tend to put a whole block of ground meat in the fridge, however, this is completely wrong. A better way to store them in the freezer is to flatten them on a tray, saving space and easy to take out when needed.

– Salmon: If your salmon is close to the expiration date, cut it into small pieces and put them in food-grade bags stored in the freezer.

– Chicken: Similar to salmon, cut into small pieces and wrap tightly before freezing.

Canned foods

– Beans: What you need to do is dry canned beans, then divide them into small bags and store them in the freezer.

– Coconut milk: If a recipe only calls for half a can of coconut milk, put the rest in an ice cube tray for future use.

– Coffee: Don’t throw away leftover coffee, put it in an ice cube tray, and then you’ll have a strong and flavorful iced coffee.

Bakery products

– Bread: Separate the slices and put two slices each into a bag, then freeze. This way, the slices will not stick together and you can defrost them anytime.

– Sponge cake: Not many people know that sponge cake can be frozen. After thawing, the quality remains the same.

Items not suitable for freezing:

First, soups or sauces made with cream tend to separate when thawed. Additionally, rice can be frozen, thawed, and reheated once, but users are advised not to do it too many times. Lastly, hard-boiled eggs will make the whites tough and change their texture when thawed…
