Recently, researchers at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland discovered that physical activity can have negative effects on health in certain cases. The study participants reported their daily physical activity time and intensity.
The researchers divided them into four groups: sedentary, moderate activity, active, and highly active. Overall, they found that those who exercised the least had a 20% higher risk of mortality compared to those who regularly exercised.

However, when they adjusted for lifestyle factors including education level, body mass index (BMI), smoking and alcohol habits, the number decreased significantly. Specifically, those in the sedentary group had only a 7% higher risk of mortality compared to those in the active group. Additionally, there were no additional benefits seen with higher exercise frequency.
The study also showed that the biological aging process is accelerated in those who exercise too little and too much. Individuals in the highly active group were found to age approximately 1.8 years faster than the rest.
Nevertheless, the health benefits of exercise cannot be denied. It is important to choose exercises that are suitable for your health, ability, preferences, and goals. There are various types of exercise, such as aerobic exercise, high-intensity interval training, strength and bone-building exercises, relaxation exercises, and stretching.
It is advisable not to start exercising too much or too strenuously, as it can lead to injuries or fatigue. Start with simple and gentle exercises, gradually increasing the duration, frequency, and intensity. If possible, seek guidance from a trainer or physician to ensure proper and effective exercise.
The World Health Organization recommends that adults aged 18-64 engage in rhythmic exercise for at least 30 minutes per day at a moderate intensity or 20 minutes per day at a high intensity. Rhythmic exercise is a great way to improve quality of life and prevent chronic diseases. To enhance longevity, it is important to combine proper exercise with a healthy lifestyle.
