1. Use hot water
Most liquid detergents today are formulated to clean with cold water. However, detergent may not dissolve well in cold water and leave white residue on the fabric. But when you have heavily soiled or greasy clothes, you may be surprised by how much better hot water cleans, as it helps the detergent or even the water itself dissolve more and stains on the clothes are also easier to clean.
2. Buy the same brand of detergent, fabric softener, and stain remover
Many detergents, fabric softeners and stain removers belong to the same brand offered by leading manufacturers. Try buying a set of these products and they will help you save on detergent costs. However, you need to evaluate your satisfaction with these laundry products including whether the quality and fragrance are suitable for you or not.
3. Use baking soda
The cleaning power of detergent can be enhanced by adding 1/2 cup of baking soda to the washing machine, and you will still save money per wash by using the same brand. Baking soda will help control sweat odor and adjust the water’s acidity level for more effective detergent and stain removal.

4. Make your own laundry products
If you are concerned about the hidden chemicals in laundry products, you can make your own laundry products with 4 main ingredients: detergent, fabric softener, starch, and fragrance boosters.
These four basic ingredients are all you need to create powdered or liquid laundry detergent. Depending on your previous detergent, you can save at least 15 cents per wash. Additionally, depending on your preferred fragrance, you can also make your own fabric softener with natural scents.
5. Use vinegar as fabric softener
Don’t worry about clothes smelling like vinegar. Just add 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to the final rinse water. The mild acid in vinegar will help rinse away any residual laundry detergent (this residue can make clothes stiff) clinging to the clothes.
Furthermore, the leading cause of mold growth and odor in front-load washers is fabric softener residue. Instead, if you choose distilled white vinegar, you will save money, have a fresh-smelling washer, and still have soft clothes.
6. Use the right amount of detergent
Many people think that using more detergent or fabric softener will make clothes cleaner. However, excessive detergent residue can cling to clothes and make them harder to clean. So try using the recommended amount of laundry detergent, and your clothes may look better and last longer.
If you have a high-efficiency washer, you only need 2 teaspoons of detergent. If you’re using more than that, it could be the reason why your washer smells unpleasant.

7. Utilize outdoor space for drying
Use an outdoor clothesline and fresh air to dry your laundry. Properly hanging your laundry on a line may even result in fewer wrinkles and eliminate the need for ironing. The fresh air will help remove any laundry detergent residues clinging to the clothes. Moreover, when hanging clothes outside, choose a suitable location and avoid direct sunlight as it can diminish the fragrance from fabric softener. Additionally, you can take advantage of the wind to remove any unpleasant odors.
For rainy and windy days, opt for indoor drying instead of outdoor. The rainwater can easily cause your clothes to become damp and moldy. Therefore, dry them completely before mold has a chance to develop.
8. Add extra heat to the iron
To make ironing clothes easier and more energy-efficient, add a sheet of aluminum foil under your ironing board. The foil will help retain heat and allow you to iron faster or at a lower temperature.
9. Plan for the outfit you want to wear
Plan what you’re going to wear. Hang it on the back of the bathroom door while you shower. The steam created can help smooth out wrinkles. Additionally, choosing your outfit in advance makes you more proactive in doing laundry./.
