Tips to remember when choosing durian: 

First: Choose durians that weigh about 2.5kg, with plump, evenly round fruits and no bent tails.

Second: The spikes on the durian should be moderately spaced, thick but not too dense.

Third: Avoid buying small or mini durians just to save money.

In the photo, I bought durians in Saigon, weighing 2.6kg. The price was 65k/1kg. With the above selection method, after removing the skin, I got 1.4kg of durian flesh and 1.2kg of durian seeds (5 large sections). So, I bought this durian for 169k. Dividing it into 5 sections, each section costs 33k.

As for the mini durians, with small fruits, the price is also 30k – 40k/ fruit, about 1kg. So, the price of that durian is about 60 – 80k. The amount of flesh obtained is equivalent to 1.5 sections of a large durian. That means you would spend about 50k for 1 section. As for durians priced at 10 – 20k/fruit, there’s not much to discuss. You would need to buy 5 fruits to get the same amount of flesh as 1 large section.

From the comparison above, it is clear that you should only buy large, beautiful durians. As the saying goes, “the fatter the pig, the better the feast”!

How to tell if a durian is ripe

First, smell it. Then, observe if the end of the durian is separating. The skin should have a slight yellow hue.

If your sense of smell doesn’t work, press two spikes of the durian together with your index and middle fingers. If they lean against each other and feel soft, it means the durian is ripe.
